TRIBUNE AT 70

I know it sounds retro, but I enjoyed an excellent lunch today with Michael Foot at the Gay Hussar. Barckley Sumner, retiring deputy editor of the organ, got its veterans together for his farewell bash at the famous Soho Hungarian restaurant, and it was magic. Talk of Beaverbrook, the Daily Herald, Bevan and Israel — and of course the atrocious Blair and the appalling state of the New Statesman and the Guardian. Michael, Ian Aitken and Geoffrey Goodman were all on top form. Where are their likes in the papers today?

I'd be interested to know who you'd back for Labour Deputy PM: sorry if you've already covered this in previous posts...

So ... is Barkers going on to greater things? Do tell.

Dave: Barkers is off to UCATT to run its press and research team.

Anonymous: Peter Hain, but I'm not sure he'll get on to the ballot - and in his absence either John Cruddas or Alan Johnson, though I've a feeling Cruddas might not make it either.

Ah Michael Foot. If only he'd won the election in 1983, we'd have had unilateral nuclear disarmament, withdrawl from the EU and mass nationalisation. Things would be so much better, we'd be poor sure, permanently on strike and maybe the Soviet Union would still have its boot on the throat of eastern europe and its 40,000 missiles aimed at us but...er...er....

So who called Benn an "Old Cunt" then??

Joanne: I'm no fan of the 1983 Labour manifesto either, though unilateral nuclear disarmament could I think have done some good.

ND: At risk of sounding like Arsene Wenger, I didn't hear anyone say that.
