GAZA BASICS

1. The Israelis are utterly cynical. The Israeli government has been looking for a means of looking tough with an election coming up. Attacking Iran appears to have been nixed by the Yanks. So why not have a go at Gaza? Principle doesn’t come into it.

2. Hamas is utterly cynical. Hamas loves being attacked by Israel because it helps scupper Fatah’s negotiation proposals. Principle doesn’t come into it.

3. Lots of people will die as a result, and any hope of a peace process will be destroyed.

4. Stop this war!

Paul, I can buy the utter cynicism line, I can buy your four points. Indeed I could probably wax lyrical, given time, on the iniquities of Hamas, but the Israeli government is something else, on a straight line back to the days of Jabotinsky, Mussolini, and interwar "isms" . Mendacious handwringing by the west, let alone the Labour Party, serves to obscure this Basic.
